Iron Horse Teacher Named a Semifinalist for County Teacher of the Year

Mona Keeler teaches algebra at Iron Horse and has been a teacher for 20 years.

Last week, algebra teachers Mona Keeler was one of five teachers in Contra Costa County named a semifinalist for county Teacher of the Year.

Keeler works with the math department at Iron Horse to find the best strategies to educate the school's students. The teacher of 20 years also tutors students at group homes and volunteers her services at a local nursing home in Walnut Creek.

"Mona personifies the 21st century teacher in my mind," Iron Horse principal Joe Nguyen said at a school board meeting in March. "Her impact is wide and at multiple levels in the San Ramon Valley community."

The other semifinalist for the award are Kim Burris (Orinda USD), Terryl Miller (Moraga USD), Mette Thallaug (Lafayette USD) and Dr. Rona Zollinger (Martinez USD).
