Going Back in Time: Civil War Comes to San Ramon

Hundreds turned out for the second annual Civil War Living History Day at Forest Home Farms

About 500 people came out today to meet soldiers, witness skirmishes and learn about life during the American Civil War and Victorian era as part of Civil War Living History Day at Forest Home Farms.

Families, groups and individuals from all over the Bay Area watched as members of the American Civil War Association and the National Civil War Association  reenacted The First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run).

Kids visited with historic characters in period costume and wandered through Union and Confederate encampments, where they learned about field surgery, discovered what it takes to be an infantry soldier, participated in recruitment interviews and shouldered rifle muskets from the 1860s.

Several dramatic skits were performed throughout the day, including a Union soldier being accused of stealing a chicken and Confederate soldiers arrested and marched out to a field to be shot for treason. Proceeds from the event--in its second year at Forest Home Farms--go toward the San Ramon Historic Foundation.

Miss all the excitement? You can experience it here in Patch's Living History Day photo gallery.
