E. coli Scare Prompts Spinach Recall

The Food and Drug Administration finds E. Coli bacteria In packs of spinach shipped to California.

Ready Pac Foods is voluntarily recalling 702 cases of their Ready Pac baby spinach after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found random samples contaminated with E. coli.

The 6-ounce bagged Spinach Temptations salads were produced and distributed in California, Oregon and Arizona between June 21 and 27.

E. coli causes abdominal cramps and diarrhea, according to the regulators. In certain cases, a severe infection can lead to kidney failure and possibly death. Children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems and damaged kidneys are most at risk.

Although E. coli was found during routine random sampling, there are no reported cases of illnesses to date the health department said.

The recalled spinach will have a "best if used by" date of July 4 with lot numbers I1707B, IR127121 and July 8 with lot numbers I2007B IR130373.

Consumers who may have purchased the infected product are should immediately dispose of it.

Ready Pac Foods says that consumers can record the use-by date and product code and call Ready Pac Consumer Affairs at (800) 800-7822 for a full refund.
