9/11 Remembered – 10 Years Later

The local fire agency shares some words in honor of the decade anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed thousands of Americans, including a San Ramon resident.

A message from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District:

Ten years ago, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark, and Washington, D.C. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the WTC attack.

At 9:37 a.m. American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon. Another 184 innocent lives were lost in this attack. The youngest victim was only 3 years old.

The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, is the only one that did not reach its intended target, presumably the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. This aircraft crashed in a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania, taking the lives of all 40 passengers. Analysis of the flight recorders recovered from the crash site revealed the actions taken by the passengers prevented the aircraft from reaching the hijackers' intended target.
