Which College Admission Process Best Suits You?

There are two main admission options available for high school seniors applying to public and private colleges:

NON-RESTRICTIVE

These do not restrict students from applying to other institutions. The student will have until May 1 to accept enrollment. There are three application plans under non-restrictive:

Regular Decision - the student submits their college application by a specific deadline, and the college will then let the student know if they are accepted or not by a specified date.

Rolling Admission - colleges review applications as they are submitted and make decisions throughout the admission cycle (usually within four to six weeks). Students should submit their application as soon as possible since some colleges will fill their class up early.

Early Action (EA) - the student sends their application by an early action deadline and the college will make its decision earlier by an announced date. Colleges will respond to early action applications in one of three ways: acceptance, rejection, or holding applications over to regular decision. Some colleges have additional restrictions on their early action programs, so make sure to read carefully their instructions.

RESTRICTIVE

Students are responsible for determining and following any restrictions placed by the institutions. There are two types of restrictive application plans:

Early Decision (ED) - the student agrees that if the college accepts them, they will withdraw all other college applications and attend the early decision college. This type of application plan may be good for students that have a clear first-choice college. But if you would like to compare colleges and their financial aid packages this application plan seriously limits a student’s options.

Restrictive Early Action (REA) - this is similar to Early Action with the difference that the college restricts applicants from applying to any other early admission plans. Colleges will respond to restrictive early action applications in one of three ways: acceptance, rejection or holding applications over to regular decision. The student will still have until May 1 to confirm their attendance.
