A student's online presence can affect college admissions.

As high school seniors work this month to finish their college applications, some may not realize that comments they casually make online could negatively affect their college acceptances. A recent article published by the New York Times called "They Loved Your G.P.A. Then They Saw Your Tweets,"stated that admissions officers have used information discovered online to deny admittance to prospective students. Admissions officers often look up online material about applicants in particular circumstances, such as clarifying an award or activity mentioned on the college application. Sometimes prospective high school students even ask an admissions office to look at blogs or videos they have posted online. Since colleges vary in their transparency about their use of online searches, high school students need to be aware and check regularly of their online presence. If needed students should be prepared to sanitize their social media accounts.
