'Special Spaces' Brings Charity Event to San Ramon to Help Terminally Ill Children
"Special Spaces" brings a charity event to San Ramon to help terminally ill children in the bay.
Last July, I was honored to have the opportunity to write about a very special organization called Special Spaces, an organization of dedicated people who work on designing bedrooms for terminally ill children in the bay area. In that article I noted that there would be a charity dinner to help this organization, and that has been planned to take place here in San Ramon. The following is written by Leonor Marquez, a participant and designer for Special Spaces regarding the event on Oct. 15. Please read her story and attend if you can. Thank you!
My name is Leonor Marquez, and I am writing to you on behalf of Special Spaces, Inc. We are a nonprofit organization whose mission is simple but zealous. We create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses. This is a place where the child can dream or imagine while addressing their medical needs. We are focused on answering one question. Where does a child go battling a life-challenging medical condition to find peace and comfort? For many of these children, their bedrooms are their only sanctuary. It is a place where they can go and find peace. There are no sticks, no pokes, and there are no doctors. It’s also their hangout. Most of these kids, because of their depressed immune system, can’t play with their friends and they spend most of their time in their bedroom if they aren’t at the hospital.

Special Spaces was founded in July 2004 on the precedent that children battling a life-challenging medial condition need their own Special Space. It is a special space of hope and inspiration and a place to find peace and comfort. Special Spaces National is located in Knoxville , Tennessee with chapters across the country. It is the vision of our organization to have a Special Spaces affiliate in every state so that children across our country who are in need of a Special Space have this opportunity.
The Special Spaces San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is made of our Director, Shelley Ham, and an inspiring staff of design and construction specialists. At every room makeover, there is a supervisor, designer, licensed contractor, seamstress and more depending on the needs of the project. In addition to our hard-working core crew, we also bring to each makeover a very capable team of volunteers to assist with every aspect of the installation.

On Oct. 15 Special Spaces San Francisco Bay Area will host “The Survivor Dinner and Dance Gala," with special guest Yau-Man Chan, Survivor fan’s favorite tribe member in Fiji and Micronesia. This fundraising event will be held at the San Ramon Community Center, in the Fountain Room, and will help our seven designers create dream bedrooms for seven Special Spaces children waiting.
Since we are new to the Bay Area we would like to ask for your help to let the community know about us and about our mission. Also, in addition to that, we would love if you can help us promote our upcoming fundraising event on Oct. 15.
Please visit our website for more information at www.specialspacessanfrancisco.org, or contact me if you have any questions. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
