Around The World In San Ramon

A must attend event in San Ramon

Guess what? Tommorrow my husband and I are taking a red-eye to the Bahamas! Without our kids! Hell yes I am bragging! But as excited as I am to be alone with my main squeeze, not only will I miss my kids, but  I will miss a great cultural event here in San Ramon.

It's called "Around the World at Neil Armstrong". It's a multicultural fair celebrating the diversity of the campus of Neil Armstrong Elementary. Kellie Fahey, Inclusion and Diversity committee chair for Neil Armstrong PTA says this about the fair, "“We want to recognize and celebrate the richness of cultures within our school community.  We wish to encourage our students to feel proud of who they are and where they came from.  Each member of the community must know that PTA values and appreciates diversity, which enriches our society.". And you are thinking why should you care?

You should care because there is free food!!! It's totally free to attend, you get to sample tasty ethnic foods for free. You get to see an informational slide show on 21 different countries, view crafts and get your "passport" stamped at each table so you can collect a souvenier at the end. Guests are encouraged to dress in an outfit from their homeland or a sports jersey for their favorite world sport.

Also the adorable students of Neil Armstrong will give a fashion parade and some of them will perform dance and music.

Last year I participated in the fair by frying up tasty latkes (potato pancakes similar to hashbrowns) to represent my adopted Jewish faith. Since I couldn't fry up latkes and watch my kids at the same time I asked my brother Brandon to come hang out with his niece and nephews. My brother was impressed, he couldn't believe this was put on by an elementary school! My brother said it was like an arts and crafts fair that a city would host. Brandon was also impressed with the large samples of food you can get and was very happy to get a Cuban sandwich at one booth and have some Kimchi added to it at the Korean booth, now that's multicultural.

This annual event,  “Around the World at Neil Armstrong”,  will be held on Friday, September 21st from 4:30 to 7:30 pm on the blacktop at 2849 Calais Drive, San Ramon.  Cost: Free!

I will be thinking of you all while I am sipping a fruity cocktail and next year I will be back to serve you some crispy latkes. Have a blast!!
