Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang Take the Cal High Stage

The musical 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown' will be playing Wednesday through Friday at California High School.

Charles Schulz's classic "Peanuts" comic strip comes to life at California High School this week in the student production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

The musical comedy is comprised of a series of vignettes incorporating scenes from the original comic and the movies, allowing the audience to take a look at the lives of Charlie Brown and his friends.

"You get to see a little more into the characters and their relationships this way," said senior Marissa Dadiw, who plays the role of Sally Brown.

This was Dadiw's first time in a musical, and she was one of only a few cast members who did not have experience in choir.

Lucerne Mottaz, who has taught choir for 19 years at Cal High, directed and choreographed the show, helping students with everything from vocals to costumes and coordinating the pit band.

"I love that the students are willing to try something new and work hard to succeed at it," said Mottaz. "The majority had never sung and danced and acted together before, so it took a while to get used to it."

Preparation for the show began in late February. Since then students have been dedicating time every day to preparing for the production.

Junoir Wes Enos, who plays the role of Charlie Brown, said it was initially difficult to sing and perform as a little kid, especially as Charlie Brown, a social outcast.

"(Charlie Brown) always tries, but never succeds," said Enos, describing his character. "But he eventually realizes that he is unique, and that it's a positive thing."

The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Cal High theater. Tickets are $10 for adults and high school students, and $5 for younger students.
