Wind Warning in East Bay Hills Until Thursday Night

Wind speeds in higher elevations could reach 35 to 60 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The risk of fire in the East Bay hills will increase as strong winds blow into the Bay Area Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service is predicting wind speeds in higher elevations could reach 35 to 60 miles per hour.

Combined with dry brush and dry air, the offshore winds will create conditions that make wildfires more likely and harder to contain if they start.

The system could vertically mix the air which would help reduce the particle pollution in the East Bay, said air quality management district spokesman Tom Flannigan. The system force movement in the stagnant air the Bay Area has been experiencing over the last few weeks, which has resulted in a 11-day ban on wood burning.

There will be no alert against wood burning for Thursday, Dec. 19.

A windstorm in late November was responsible for two deaths, blackouts across the region and scores of downed trees.
