Free Lamp Swap, 'Green' House Calls in San Ramon

California Youth Energy Services is having a free halogen-for-CFL-lamp swap. Plus, San Ramon residents can sign up for "green" house calls.

After three weeks of “Green House Calls,” the youth Energy Specialists of CYES Pleasanton have changed more than 1,100 light bulbs and visited more than 100 homes in the community.

Dangerous halogen lamps have been swapped for energy-efficient new torchiere lamps at no cost to residents, and innumerable clotheslines, power strips and efficient water measures have been given to residents for free in hopes of reducing their energy and water (and money) wastefulness.

If you haven’t signed up for your free house call yet, you can sign up here. The program ends Aug. 11, and space is limited.

Do you have a 300-watt or higher halogen floor lamp that creates unnecessary heat and want to replace it with an energy-efficient equivalent without signing up for a house call?

Come to the California Youth Energy Services booth at the First Wednesday Street Fair in downtown Pleasanton on Aug. 3.

You can swap your old lamp for a brand new black or white lamp for free. (Product information for the new torchieres: click here for black and here for white.) Bring your old halogen and CYES will recycle it for you.

“I love my new floor lamp,” said Shefali Kumar, a Pleasanton resident who recently had a “green” house call during which she swapped a halogen lamp for a new torchiere.

“The light is great and it’s easy to reach. I’m thrilled with it.”

Dublin and San Ramon residents, wondering how you can save energy and money, too? If you live within 10 miles of 333 Division St. in downtown Pleasanton (the CYES site office), then you’re eligible to sign up. Additionally, there’s a CYES site in Livermore, so all Livermore residents can participate.

“The team is off to a great start! I am so happy with the amount of light bulbs we are changing and how happy people are to have us here,” wrote Jasmin Alves, CYES Pleasanton LIFT (Leader in Field Training), on the Rising Sun Energy Center blog. “Pleasanton residents are definitely going to see a lot of change in their electricity and water bills.”
