Easter Egg Hunt Brings Local Families Together

One family organizes its 13th annual Easter egg hunt for friends and family.

It took only 15 minutes for more than 2500 Easter eggs, hidden throughout the front yards of nine different houses, to find their way into the baskets of energized and eager children.

The Gerbert family, with the help of the other residents in their court, put on its 13th annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, bringing together more than 70 kids of all ages, from pre-Kindergarteners to high school students.

The yearly tradition began as a much smaller event 13 years ago, with only 200 eggs hidden on the Gerbert’s property.

“It was just a little Easter egg hunt for our kids and their friends from school,” said Scott Gerbert, whose son is now at college and whose daughter is a high school junior.

Over the years the egg hunt branched out to neighbor’s houses as more and more families came to participate.

Dave and Michelle Sandusky, longtime friends of the Gerberts, remembered how the event expanded to include children from Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, soccer teams, and other activities in which the Gerbert children were involved.

“It’s a diverse group of people,” said Michelle Sandusky. “The kids brought more and more friends into it.”

On Friday, several teen volunteers came to the Gerbert household to stuff Easter eggs with candies that were donated by the families that participated in the hunt.

These eggs were then hidden under rocks, inside mailboxes, and behind bushes early Saturday morning by Scott Gerbert, his wife, Lynette, and other willing parents and neighbors.

This year’s hunt turned out a success, with all the participants enjoying the Easter egg treats and even a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny.

“Some people are big on Christmas, for others Thanksgiving is their big family holiday, and this is it for us,” said Gerbert.
