Photo Gallery: Sheep Shearing Day at Forest Home Farms
Hundreds "flock" to Forest Homes Farms for the annual Sheep Sheering Festival.
As the temperatures warmed up Sunday, San Ramon residents took off their coats. And that's just what the sheep did, too, during Sunday's sheep shearing day at Forest Home Farms.
Sheep shearing was only part of the event, put on annually by the San Ramon Parks Service and San Ramon Historic Foundation. Hundreds of visitors also watched Border Collies herd sheep, helped spin wool into yarn, created old-time crafts and listened to bluegrass music performed by the band OMGG.
"Shearing the sheep is done once a year, and it does not hurt the sheep," said Patsy Galati, president of Sheep 4 Ewe, the sheep co-op that brought the sheep for the event. Master sheep sheerer Russ Duguid, from Livermore, was in charge of giving the flock their haircuts.
After the shearing, artisans helped children spin wool from the sheep's shorn fleece into yarn using drop spindles and spinning wheels--one that dated back to George Washington's days. And wood makers, worked with guests to make handmade wood toys on lathes.
