North Camino Ramon Plan Gets Closer to Approval

After a series of public meetings, the San Ramon City Council is coming close to making a final decision on a city plan that would transform 295 acres from Fostoria Way down to Executive Parkway and from Interstate 680 across to Alcosta Boulevard.

The  was discussed by the city council on Tuesday and a final decision on the plan could come as soon as its next meeting on July 24, the Contra Costa Times reports.

The plan includes retail storefront, restaurants, commercial services, two-story mixed-use buildings and residential housing. A parking garage would go up where City Hall currently sits.

On Tuesday, the council directed staff to decrease the number of housing units from 1,500 to 1,124.

The idea behind the plan is "smart growth" — a place where residents can live close to work (Bishop Ranch) and also live close to the amenities they want (retail, restaurants, ect.).

Currently, this area is home to the Crow Canyon Shopping Center, , Bishop Ranch offices, a Toyota parts and distribution center, a , a  and a number of other business and administrative buildings.

Property owners can keep their current businesses as long as they like and won't be forced out.

"When (owners) feel it is best for them this is our plan," Lauren Barr, a senior planner for the city said in February.

The plan does factor in a new off-ramp being build on Norris Canyon Road, that has faced resistance from some members of the community. But staff said the plan could still move forward even if the controversial HOV off-ramp is built.
