McNerney Announces Re-Election Bid

The District 11 congressman also said he plans to move to San Joaquin County.

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, announced today he will seek re-election in a new congressional district in the San Joaquin Valley.

The Democratic congressman said he plans to move from his home in Pleasanton into a residence in the new district for the 2012 election.

McNerney has represented his current district (the 11th) for the past five years. That district includes Lodi, Stockton and Manteca as well as Dublin, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Danville and a sliver of southern Santa Clara County.

The new district being proposed by the Calfornia Citizens Redistricting Commission creates a district that is made up mostly of San Joaquin County and eastern Contra Costa County. The cities include Lodi, Stockton, Lathrop, Antioch Oakley and Brentwood.

“This area has a resilient spirit, a strong sense of community and a great future ahead," McNerney said in a press release. "I’m deeply committed to this area and excited to continue working for San Joaquin and East Contra Costa counties.”

The Tri-Valley area is expected to move into a congressional district now represented by Democrat Pete Stark. San Ramon would be part of that district, too.

The redistricting commission is scheduled to approve their latest proposals for congressional, state Assembly, state Senate and Board of Equalization districts at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
