Firefighters Contain House Fire Near Broadmoor Drive

Fire has burned through roof of single-story home.

A fire gutted the back of a one-story home on the corner of Chestnut Court and Broadmoor Drive Friday evening.

Firefighters contained the blaze within 30 minutes. One firefighter was sent to the hospital. It was not immediately clear what his injuries were, said San Ramon Valley Fire Protection Agency spokeswoman Kim French. He was treated and released.

The fire caused $300,000 in property damages.

Six fire engines and two trucks responded to reports of a structure fire around 6:10 p.m. Friday. Police blocked off traffic on Broadmoor for two blocks north and south of the fire for more than an hour.

Neighbors and onlookers crowded the street corners trying to catch a glimpse of the flames or snapping pictures with their cell phone cameras.

The house – a rental – is still standing, but much of the back portion was burned up, French said. Firefighters had to tear two holes in the middle of the roof to vent the flames.

"Crews from Station 39 arrived to discover heavy fire and smoke coming from the interior of the structure which had extended into the attic area," said French in a press release. "Firefighters immediately began an aggressive offensive attack and were able to successfully extinguish the fire in less than 30 minutes."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A fire investigator had yet to arrive to the scene as of 7:30 p.m. Friday. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Neighbors called 911 after seeing smoke.
